Lead in Denver Water

More than one million people living in the Denver metro area have been warned about possible lead contamination in their tap water.  The problem is traced to older lead-based piping that exists in those older homes.
High levels of lead were discovered in a routine check of the water system. Lead concentration was detected in 8 out of 60 homes, with one home testing four times higher than federal standards allow.
Denver Water said the problem could exist in every older neighborhood in the Denver metro area and that it is especially true for any home that was built in the 1950s.
Lead poisoning can lead to many health problems, including brain damage and kidney failure.
Denver Water is advising homeowners to take extra precautions including:
  • Let faucets run for several seconds to flush out lead.
  • Only draw cold water for drinking, cooking and preparing baby formula.
  • Use a filtration system.
Concerns over problems with lead content in the water should be taken as seriously as problems associated with lead paint.
We suggest that this is just one example of the type of problems that crop up in our water supplies all over all the time.  Don't wait until you know you have a problem to protect your family's health with a good water filter.

Water Scarcity

1.8 billion people will live in regions suffering from water scarcity, and two-thirds of the world's population will live under water-stressed conditions by 2025.  This is from U.N. estimates.

Worlds Largest Desalination Plant Likely in California

The San Diego County Water Authority announced a tentative agreement to buy the entire output of what will be the Western hemisphere’s largest seawater desalination plant, clearing a major hurdle begin construction.

The hope is to reduce reliance on drought-prone fresh water supplies.

The plant in Carlsbad will produce 50 million gallons a day, enough to supply about 7 percent of the San Diego region.

Handheld UV Water Purifiers

An interesting newer line of products we've added to the friendsofwater.com store is the series of Handheld UV Water Purifiers from SteriPen.

There are very small portable Water Purifiers for use in traveling, outdoors and emergency preparedness.  All of them work by submersing the light wand into water.  They eliminate viruses, bacteria and protozoa.  This includes cryptosporidium and giardia, and travel pathogens that cause diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis and polio.  They are all also effective on disaster risks that cause cholera and other water-borne illnesses.

Different models are available with variants that include solar power, hand-powered, rechargeable, long-lasting, with a USB charger connection, with a bottle, etc.

Units start at $59.95.

Web Misinformation

It is our view that you can do your research on the web to help get informed. But in the end you do have to trust your own knowledge and intuition.  And of course your own experience.

Look up a topic you know a lot about on the web.  How much misinformation do you see?  Plenty, I'll bet.  So don't just accept whatever somebody has on their site.

In the water filter field, there are lots of sites that provide at least some bad information.  Nobody is perfect and can make occasional mistakes.  But if you see statements like "Only reverse osmosis filters remove fluoride."  then you are looking at a site run by people that are either deliberately misinforming you, or more likely are just repeating something that they read on another site and made no effort to learn the truth themselves.  When the Water Quality Association reports activated alumina as the best way to filter fluoride, how can people continue to provide such wrong info?

Similarly, there are sites that state categorically that there are no shower filters that reduce chloramine.  If you ask them about the shower filters that we sell, we imagine that they will tell you that they simply could not reduce chloramine - there just isn't enough filter material.  But ask them if they know about the patented process whereby the kdf in the filters is improved - and ask them if they have actually tested these showers - and they will have to admit that they don't actually have any knowledge of these filters.

We've even  heard people doubt their own experience of having better shower water, and healthier hair and skin after using one of these filters - because they read something saying there aren't shower filters that remove chloramine!

However, nearly everyone who tries these is delighted because they are aware of the improvement in their water.  We believe we may actually have even saved lives with the chloramine-removal filters.  One Houston-area customer who had his chloramine problems solved with a whole house filter from us - told us his neighbor got in the shower and died.

We find regional pool suppliers are another frequent source of misinformation.  We sell natural pool filters that keep you water clean without the addition of disinfectants.  This is of course great for your health.  But there are lots of local pool suppliers (who coincidentally sell chlorine and other chemicals) who will swear that these filters won't work.  They cannot however actually had any experience with these filters - because quite simply, they work great!  In several years of selling these natural pool filters, we've not once had a customer dissatisfied.  But we've know of a number of people who felt so pressured that they caved in and continue to use unneeded chemicals.

If you are buying something, ask yourself if these are people you want to do business with.  Websites are made by people.  Does the website you are looking at project what you look for in a vendor?

Water Quality Association

We're just back from attending the Water Quality Association's Annual Trade Show.  We found some new products that we'll add to our online store soon.  However, we remain convinced that the lines of filters we offer are the best to be had.  The kitchen, shower, bath, garden and whole house filters use the best technology available for filtering contaminants and leaving the trace elements that the body needs.  The pitchers, the travel filters, and the preparedness bottles, pumps and such remain the best we can find.

We'll keep looking for great products to save and filter water.  And are pleased we've found some new quality products to add to the line we offer.  But we continue to believe we're offering the best that there is for effectiveness and value.

Drought in Britain

Last year was the driest in England and Wales for 90 years,

On the River Kennet in Berkshire County, conservationists are resorting to stunning fish with electric probes to rescue them from the dwindling water and move them.  Farmers across East Anglia are considering abandoning entire crops.  At nature reserves springs have dried up, leaving all kinds of critters struggling to find food.

Experts believe that anything short of a deluge of biblical proportions to replenish aquifers across an area stretching from Lincoln to Birmingham and down to Portsmouth will make watering bans and irrigation restrictions inevitable. Up to 18 million homes and businesses could be affected by April.
